Can someone help me with a Unix Command?

I am taking an online unix class and I don't have much knowledge about it. I know how to make folders and navigate them to an extent, but I need to do this:





Enter a command to see 6-letter words that begin with a "b" (uppoer or lower-case) and have an "e" as its third letter.





I have been reading and I have no idea how to do this. Please someone help.

Maybe the article just compared some key features of the operating system like user management or security related functions. In that case vista is maybe a little bit closer to UNIX as other windows releases are but still not comparable. Vista and UNIX based system have radical different approaches to achieve their functionality.





But in essence, UNIX and windows based operating systems have nothing in common except that they are both state of the art software products which help you to use your hardware.

Windows is a general applications OS, targeted largely at businesses. It has a very wide range of applications, many of which can be downloaded and run for free. It is notorious for the number of security holes it has, and has amazingly bad tech support.





MacOS is the operating system for Apple computers. It has a highly polished user interface, takes very little effort to use, and has decent tech support. Unfortunately, it isn't as popular as Windows, so you won't find the bredth of applications available for it. Also, if you want to do something cool, special and different, then you're hozed because the OS is designed around people who don't want to customize. MacOS really only runs on Apple computers, and the whole package tends to be more expensive than the Windows equivalent for the same power, although proponents aruge that the maintenance effort in Windows makes up for it.





Unix is a family of operating systems designed to run in a mainframe environment. There have been some efforts to make Unix work on PC's, but for the most part it remains the domain of large business systems. Linux is the most popular attempt to create a Unix-like operating system for personal computers. Mainframe systems: The computer hardware tends to be rigidly configured since they are intended to produce some specific results. All I want to do is search for an EXACT PHRASE in zipped files in a UNIX database, and have the querry return all instances of the exact phrase. (UNIX instruction manuals are too confusing!)





So, if I wanted to search a bunch of zipped files in a UNIX database for files containing the phrase


"the more details you provide", case insensitive - what exactly would I enter? I've used the GREP commands before, but don't really know what I'm doing. I'll really appreciate your help!

What you are asking for, regex searching in blobs is tough enough, but to add the fact that the files in the blobs are zipped really adds a wrench into the mix.





Ideally, you might index the files before they are zipped. Then though an olap cube you could wrench the data out that you need. If this isn't feasable, then the solution depends on your database. For example, in oracle, you can use java to extract the files, unzip to memory, then run regex queries on each file. Expect your queries to be mighty slow and processor intensive.





Worst case scenario you select a single blob at a time, unzip it, run grep -e or other regex utility on it, store the results, then move on to the next file. Something like this will take quite a while to run.





My suggestion is to work out a way to index the files based on what you think the regex expressions would be. Then run your queries against the indexed data for quick results.





I'm going to hate myself for saying this, but check out Kimball's book on data wharehousing. A bit more info than you'll need, but it'll provide a decent start for you.
Reply:Firstly if they're zipped up and stored in the database you're out of luck because you're going to have to extract all of them, unzip them and then search them.





Assuming that you infact actually have big blob columns with unzipped data files in them, you don't need regex for an exact match, try:





SELECT something FROM table WHERE column LIKE '%he more details you provide%';

1. Simple example: Assume that you need to search for "the more details you provide" in a file a.zip. Run the command:





# zcat -n a.zip | grep -i "the more details you provide"





Here is the explaination of this command: zcat will cat the file even if its zipped. The grep will try to find out the text string from this file. The "-i" switch to grep command will enable "ignore case" nature of grep.





2. So if you know the list of files, you can do something like this:





# export FILELIST="a.zip b.zip c.zip d.zip"


# for file in FILELIST; do zcat -n $file | sed "s/^/$file: /" | grep -i "the more details you provide"; done

Theoritically No, Practically yes.


You are going in for Oracle RDBMS i think for better job prospects, although not from being UNIX background is in no way a hindrance to learn oracle.


but for better job prospects, it is advisable that you learn Unix also side by side as Unix with Oracle has far more demand in market than just Oracle on windows.

You can use Windows OS with Oracle RDBMS. Here you can get Oracle knowledge but not able to use the OS functionalities more effectively. In unix, you can write an effective shell script for oracle,schedule a script in crontab, able to set environment variables for multiple databases by running a single shell script, switch between diff users, and lots of things are there. If you want to learn Oracle along with OS, start using unix OS with Oracle RDBMS.

If the files contain lists of numbers separated by commas (as your example shows) then you could try:

But if you want all of the results to end up back into a single line, again like your example shows, then:

Practise Unix?
There are compiled unix commands that will work on Windows (Im guessing that is what you have). The UnxUtils are a good set.





You might also want to ask your ISP (the providor that puts you on the internet) and see if they offer shell accounts. Some do. Then you would be able to login to a unix or linux machine that they run and play with the commands there.

Unless the program has been built in such a way that it expects to be in a certain place, it doesn't matter.





Put it anywhere.





If you don't want to type an explicit path to it each time, then put it in one of the directories in your $PATH. Type echo $PATH to find out what they are.
Reply:Normally user installed programs are installed in /usr/bin or usr/local/bin directory. Those paths are usually in your $PATH variable.





But, you can really install it anywhere you want to, including a USB drive or removable storage. You simply add the full path of the install directory to your $PATH invironment variable and export it. That way, all you have to do is type the name of the executable.

In UNIX systems, two critical files located under the etc directory store user account information . Explain the the differences between the /etc/passwd and the /etc/shadow files as they relate to user information confidentiality.

/etc/passwd files store information differently than /etc/shadow files. In the passwd file, the actual password is stored there; when shadowing is used, a "x" is placed in the file, and the shadow file serves as an encrytped hash file to look up the password. Basically, when password shadowing is used, it makes it a lot more secure, because the passwords aren't just easily looked up in a file.

I'd say download a free version of linux. it should have enough for you to learn the basic unix commands and allow you to learn shell scripting along with using things like awk, grep and sed. after that if you want you can invest money into getting a professional copy of either red hat or SuSe linux and try learning about administration.





O'Reilley had a couple of really good books on UNIX systems administration and Network administration. The good thing about UNIX/LINUX there is no end to how much you can grow. also compared to windows its relatively cheaper to learn UNIX since most of the software come packaged with the OS and you won't have to spend money on software. For example: Suse linux comes with a copy of Star Office (very similar to MS Office) it also comes with a C++ compiler and a plethora of other languages. Enjoy

TTY is just short for teletypewriter. It is just a way of showing what your access point is. If you log in you may be pts/2, then you open another session and that one will be on pts/3....

I'm a budding hacker and I'm teaching myself to code, networking, ports, protocols, etc and I was wondering why people always talk about Linux/Unix being a great OS for hacking.

Why should I get Linux/Unix if I'm into hacking?
Linux is a great system for programmers etc. because it's strength lies in it's command line power, not so much in the GUI. Many popular exploit/hack tools are for linux, and are much more difficult in windows, or simply do not work at all or are not made for windows. hope this helps.

How do you open an unix executable file?

Select the photos, right-click on them (or ctrl-click if you have a single-button mouse) and select "Open with" from the menu. Then select "Preview", if it's in the list. If it's not in the list, select "Other" and navigate to the Preview application (it's at /Applications/Preview). If Preview is greyed out, make sure to choose "Enable: All Applications" instead of "Enable: Recommended Applications" in the pull down menu.





Optionally, you can check the "Always Open With" check box.

Before you do that, download the ISO images from http://www.freebsd.org/where.html. Do yourself a favor and get the latest (6.2 as I write this answer). Create CD's from the ISO images. The first CD should be bootable.





Read the INSTALL and README and other documentation files on the first CD. Yes, really, read them.





Then boot your computer from the first disk and *READ* and follow the directions. THIS WILL WIPE OUT THE WINDOWS OS ON YOUR COMPUTER.





Be conservative about installing packages.





Do install the ports directory on your disk if you have the space.





Do install the source tree on you disk if you have the space.





Do have the space.





Log on as root, cd to /usr/share/doc/en and read the handbook, also available at http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859...





From there, you're on your own.





Now, that's just FreeBSD.





Once you understand it, then you can check out http://www.rpath.com for another flavor or Unix.





The great thing about Unix is that there are so many to choose from.

Unix is more rare outside of data-centers and larger enterprises. Linux is very common for developers and smaller websites. Is it possible to run Linux or Unix and Vista on my computer without partitioning the hard drive?

Running Linux or Unix from within Vista would be ideal, but I realise this is probably not possible because they are separate OSs. I've just started a course in IT and they've told me to put Unix, or failing that Linux on my computer, but I don't want to partition my hard drive because it wipes it and I want all my programs and data in one place, plus it seems like a lot of hassle I can't be arsed with. They've also told me about Cigywn but I've had a look and it looks too different from Linux/Unix to be useful. So if there's any possible chance I'm able to run Linux/Unix without partitioning my hard drive please let me know...

One option not mentioned so far and for me the easiest is similar to the option of an external drive. Install a second hard drive, it only needs to be a smallish one 20gig or above would be adequate. Install your Linux onto this and it is then completely independent of your Windows drive. Try the Micro Mart forum at www.micromart.co.uk where I am sure some of the guys will help you. You have to join up but it's completely free and they have some Linux wizards there. Hope this helps.

Additionally, partitioning your disk drive doesn't wipe out all your old data and programs. Just re-size your current partition using software like QParted -

Live CD would be my second choice.





You can also try to find a copy of a software called Partition Magic that lets you dynamically resize partition with wiping it. Then you could go for multiboot.





I prefer VMWare, although you need about 2x the amount of RAM you would otherwise.

I would try installing it to an external drive. You would either have to install grub (and may have problems if the external drive were not plugged in - I am not sure), or come up with another boot option. You could always restore the MBR if you had grub problems.

Sorry, but this is the only way. It isn't that hard, though. Just buy another hard drive (or salvage an old one), pop it in, boot to a Unix/Linux distro installation CD, and overwrite the new hard drive's partitions.





You will have to keep your Vista hard drive as master because Vista sucks that way. As a result, you will have to make one tinsy little ajustment to the Master Boot Record on your Vista hard drive (you modify the mount point). Honestly, I do not know how to do this on distros other than OpenSUSE 10.2, but it should be self explanatory.

Reply:Linux offers a version that operates as a bootable disk. It is not installed on the hard drive.


Maybe you could consider adding a separate hard drive to run Linux or Unix on. These are even available as external drives.

Reply:Virtual Machine free from Microsoft could be an answer but here is what I have done.


I have a SATA drive with SUSe 10.2 on fully loaded, I've even got my scanner working.


I then have a IDE drive which plugs into a drive bay.


Now for reasons known to some when I plug the the Ide drive in the bay and switch on, that drive takes over the booting and on that drive I have XP. without that drive it boots from SUSe.


Best of both worlds eh.

Reply:The best way I have found is to download vmware player which is free. You could then download any of the 100s of virtual appliances which include many different linux and unix distros. This way you could run many different linux distros at the same time from Vista without having to go through the linux installation process. These will run at near native speed, but you may have some problems viewing video or listening to audio from linux.

As to batch processes its much the same as any other system. Create a batch file (unix shell script file) with all of the commands in it and run it. Or automate it into the AT system (on unix its called cron)

Learn to work with Linux. It's easily available, easy to install, widely used, and provides a good base for learning *nix systems. 80pct of what you learn on Linux will apply directly to Unix, and the other 20pct will be minor variations from Linux to Unix.. or Linux (A) to Linux (B)... or to FreeBSD or Solaris or AIX or...


Just be sure to start with a fairly vanilla distribution like Ubuntu, Slackware, or Debian: no funky, x86-64 optimized to run off a cd and store persistent changes on a USB stick using a new package system and running the whole OS from under 100MB of RAM- style distribution, ok?
Reply:Unix presents some unique issues -- there are over 50 variations of the OS and not all are compatible. Linux on the other hand is making some inroads into WinTel and you will find that the demand for programming skills in this OS is growing. You want to give yourself the opportunity to work in the growing environment and I'd suggest Linux first.

Keep in mind that most organizations are Microsoft shops so that is the majority of the jobs in the market. It's good that you are trying to understand multiple platforms but don't let those Microsoft skills degrade too much.

As long as you are using NTFS in Windows 2000/XP or greater, then you can map the partitions as directories under an existing drive letter (typically C:). Otherwise, you are limited to 26... A/B for floppy, C for the boot partition, then usually D/E for CD/DVD, and 21 more for additional partitions.





Essentially, UNIX requires you to "mount" all partitions (and external devices) as a directories within the root, or slash / (which represent the boot partition)... so UNIX/Linux has never had a limitation.





The final question is why 24 partitions? The latest Windows and Unix/Linux versions can handle Terabyte drives without the need for partitioning.

Reply:I think in windows it would then go aa:\ ab:\ and so on, but I don't know how many drives you could have total. in unix(linux, at least) the cd and dvd wouldn't matter because they would be cd0, dvd0 or something like that. the partitions would be sda1 - sda99 or hda1 - hda99. I don't know how many it would support total either. but if you have a disk big enough to need all those partitions, you should get lots of disks or a raid in case that one disk goes out.

Reply:When you type in "bash" you are just starting a bash shell. Presumably you are already in some older or less powerful shell.





When you speak of edit/write mode are you talking about vi? If so, just use some other editor. There are several widely available for unix and many more for linux e.g. gedit, kedit, kate, etc., off the top of my head.

Exactly the same as Windows administrators, but on Unix machines. Setting up machines, controlling users and security, maintaining networks, recovering from user errors and trying to keep everyone happy. Quite a lot of them live in super luxury house or apartments, these are generally the best at their job, and are often unrecognisable as Unix admins. This last rule also applies to Windows and Linux administrators.
Reply:I bet there is a lot of people who are wondering that. A lot of UNIX (and Solaris=more obscure form of Unix) admins hate Windows. They hate not only Microsoft Windows but any operating systems that allows a person to accomplish a task with few mouse clicks. These Unix admins prefare to work on a command line. As another poster pointed out, Unix admins are known for their reclusiveness.
Reply:Unix is an old operating system. Its built for the days when there were not any PCs (personal computers) and everyone connected their keyboard and monitor to one big computer. Everyone had to have an account.





The adminisitrator managed the system. The accounts, kept the programs running, made sure that the users didnt messup the server or mess with each other. Think of it as the principle in a school.





Now Linux, Mac, Windows all have administrators but since its often a computer with only one user it doesnt really have the function of the old unix admins.

Most shell interpreters don't *need* a 'doit' program - just saying 'cat /etc/motd' is sufficient But if you feel the need to do it the hard way (at the expense of a few extra fork/exec pairs you'd not have done the easy way), this should work:

awk already understands that tabs or sequences of spaces delimit columns.





The Unix sort utility also understands columns as such and will deal fine with tabs.

If you need to type a tab in the shell, typically you hit Ctrl+V first and then type the tab and that should get you a tab character. You would need to enclose that tab in quotes in the command-line as well.

Reply:One thing other answers might have missed is that you're asking for the year the files were created. I'm not aware of any contemporary *nix filesystems which store this information. Typically, all that is stored is the date the file was last modified, the date it was last accessed, and the date the file's inode(s) was/were last changed.





If you just want to see the date the file was last modified, try "ls --full-time". That works under GNU ls - not sure if Solaris uses GNU ls or not, but it's worth a try.

Look at one of www.openbsd.org or www.netbsd.org or www.freebsd.org or www.opensolaris.org. At this time, for you, being a new comer to Unix/Linux, I suggest you use only Linux until you get used to it. Unices are a bit difficult to install and use and their user and support community is small and focussed. The above mentioned ones are some of freely available UNIX variants. Look at www.distrowatch.com for more such.





Use Ubuntu or Debian. I suggest you go for Debian. It does take a lot of work to install Debian as opposed to Ubuntu. But after installing, Ubuntu takes a lot of work to get it to your tastes while Debian takes almost no work to come to your tastes.





For Unix as well as Linux, this quote is true. "Unix is user friendly. It chooses its friends.". Both are operating systems. They are for doing things that you want done using your computer. Much the same as Windows. They differ by being a tad cleverer than Windows.





I suggest you go to www.debian.org and look at the installation manual. In short steps, this is what you have to do to install Debian successfully. Download Debian CD1. Delete a partition. Brun the CD1 to a CD. Boot your laptop with the CD1. Ask the installer to use the empty space that you created by deleting a partition from Windows. Answer a few network related questions such as domain name, DNS, IP address and such. Let it install the CD1 for a laptop configuration. Pop the CD out when the installation is over and reboot into the Linux system.





After you boot into the Linux system, open System%26gt;Administration%26gt;Synaptic and install xchat. With xchat, join #debian on irc.freenode.net to start asking questions and getting answers live.





Also join some of the many Debian user mailing lists.

There are loads of Unix variants out there, just like there are loads of Linux variants out there. Picking one can be a huge chore.





For a beginner to Free and Open Source software, I'd recommend starting off with Ubuntu. It's popular, easy to get help, easy to get started, and coexists well with Windows.





You can download the Ubuntu 7.10 CD, burn it to CD, and boot your PC from it. You will get a LiveCD version of Ubuntu Linux to use. If you like it, you can double-click on the INSTALL icon to put it on your HD.





If you do decide to install onto your HD, make sure you choose the FREE SPACE option! Otherwise it will erase your Vista installation as well. Aside from that, you shouldn't have any problems.

Unix has been around for many years and was developed by universities (Which is why it is free). It is highly stable however extremely user violent. Its interface consists of a text type command set similar to that used by MSDOS (It actually preceeds MSDOS by many years).





Linux was developed on top of the Unix foundation by a man called Linus. Thus the name Linus + Unix = Linux. This operating system was developed to make life a little easier for the developers of Unix platforms. It contains a better subset of API (Advanced Programming Interfaces) and it is ALOT easier to use.





This said Linux could still be considered user violent to those inexperienced with how a computer functions and could be frustrating for anybody wanting to use their computer to play games. Linux DOES HAVE GAMES but it cannot play those developed for the windows platform unless run through some sort of emulation program like WINE.





These operating systems are great. they are older and faster smaller (at the core) and more stable then windows and can really unlock the potential of your computer.





I reitterate though that they are not easy to use and if you are unsure about these things you should not install them...





On a side note for windows operating systems Id advise you DOWNGRADE to Windows XP. It is a far superior operating system then the latest Vista platform. Its smaller, faster and just as easy to use. Microsoft screwed up big time on Vista they just refuse to admit it.

Final question: What are you trying to do in Unix? Server, programming, scripting, safer internet browsing? The list goes on. Choosing the distribution is the hard part, choosing the window system during the install is the next. After that it's like transitioning from MS to Mac, MS to Linux is similar. Windows to KDE, Gnome, or Xfce interface, or DOS to Bash and Batch to Shell. My suggestion is play with a live CD for a little bit to get the feel, then select and install a version on a computer at home, preferably a test computer but it could be installed after a repartition of your hard drive to even dual-boot along side Windows. Who knows, eventually you may never go back to MS anyways.

A four year school is not likely to offer a degree in a specific language or platform. What you can do is choose a four year program in computer science or engineering and then study that platform.





Ex. - When I got my masters in engineering, I specifically chose a track in software engineering. I further narrowed that focus into system design and implementation. The same principle applies to a B.A. or B.S. - You don't, for example, get a degree in international marketing, you get a degree in business with a focus in international marketing.

Reply:UNIX really isn't something you'd major in. Normally you'd learn to use UNIX as part of a program for system administration/IT, or programming. Just make sure they include some form of UNIX (Linux, SunOS, etc.) in the classes.





Also, nothing beats self-study. If you have an old PC lying around, download RedHat Linux for free and install it. If you buy one of those 'teach yourself Linux' books, many of them include a version of Linux as well.

Linux is modeled on Unix, but developed independently, and is free, open sourced software. Unix, in its many flavors is propriatery, although I think Sun might have open sourced their version of Unix, but I could be very wrong.





Linux / Unix are very powerful, multi-user capable systems, and can be run either from command line or through GUIs. I am not sure what limitations Unix has in terms of using the numerous GUIs that run on Linux.





I think Unix is more hardware demanding than Linux, but I could be wrong.





DOS is a command line OS, single user, much less powerful than Linux or Unix. Many commands for DOS were also present in (and copied from?) CP/M. Many Linux/Unix commands are different from those of DOS.

I AM NOVICE INTO DESIGNING AND PROGRAMMING IN THE WEB.WHY DON'T YOU GUYS OUT THERE TELL ME MORE ABOUT THIS .


I found out that using pws in windows 98 and 2000 pro or IIS in windows xp ,we don't need to code a dynamic interactive stuff since i provides all these in the wizard as a temlate in other office applications.


But my newly hosted personal site was hosted in apache server which supports only linux and unix hence pws and iis work would go in vain although it looks good on the computer before its hosted or the files uploaded to my cpanel.

Memory management is the act of managing computer memory. In its simpler forms, this involves providing ways to allocate portions of memory to programs at their request, and freeing it for reuse when no longer needed.

You may want to look at the Apache Xerces project. They have a C (or C++) XML parser, which does DOM and SAX.

For starters, there are many flavors of free unix downloads but I tend to use the CentOS because it is basically Redhat without the licensing fees and what my employer prefers. Basically 99.9% of rpm's that will run on Redhat will also run on CentOS and all of the troubleshooting documents related to Redhat apply to CentOS as well. But they are all good!!! so try a few and see which you like best. Maybe you're adventurous and want to run more than one flavor on a single box, in that case check out the open source version of Xen....


And if you want true Unix on an i386 I do believe that Sun has open sourced it's Intel version of Solaris but you would have to confirm that by looking on www.sun.com

I have a Unix shell script program that wants to run in the foreground terminal window. It runs fine in there, but it requires that the terminal always be open.





I want to run it as a background/service application so I do not have to keep logged in.

Reply:Two things to do...





(1) You need to re-direct both the input and the output so it doesnt crash on you if it actually does require a terminal to be open while running. Typically, shorting them to /dev/nul or having some preset text files with some bogus inputs and something to grab the output may work. UNLESS the program is CURSES aware or an X-Windows or similar program - then you need to run it in a virtual x-windows windows that is not attached to a physical monitor of any kind.





(2) Add an ampersand (%26amp;) at the end of the command to make it run in the background, OR if you have superuser rights, put it into your crontab to run at specific time or times during the day.

Background jobs tend to terminate otherwise when you logout. Run man nohup for the grisly details.
