Where can I download a good Unix emulator?

http://www.cygwin.com/setup.exe is the general application that runs on Windows.





Otherwise I suggest downloading an .iso (image to burn) of something like Ubuntu Live from http://mirrors.cat.pdx.edu/ubuntu-iso/5.... and burn it onto CD. These live CDs don't actually install anything on your computer but let you boot off of the CD directly and test-drive it, though this is Linux, a cousin of Unix.
