Unix Help???

How do you determine a device name when using unix?

I'm trying to extract some files with the command

cpio -idmv%26lt;/dev/ ???

But I don't know the device name. The drive (exabyte exb-8500) is an optical drive (like a cd rom) connected to

scsi scusi card.I'm trying to extract from a 8mm tapes.

When I use the command (Which works with my dds-4 tapes

using a diffrent machine-hp,dat40) cpio -idmv %26lt;/dev/nst0 the machine just freezes. Is it because i need the device name?

please help..how do I get the device name? how Do I even set permissions to that device if I can't see it?
