Can I find out the IP address of the person that has been accessing my computer remotely using Unix?
Ex-boyfriend has been gathering my passwords, reading and deleting files even with 'file sharing' off.
Unix- Exboyfriend is logging onto my computer (part2)?
You have a really complex problem and to solve it you're going to need to reset all of your passwords (AND SECRET QUESTIONS! -- otherwise your passwords can be "recovered").
To someone from remotely connecting your computer you'll need to identify the process that is letting him log on, it doesn't sound like he's using remote desktop (built in feature to WINXP Pro), because remote desktop logs out other users, and remote assistance (another built in feature), requires the user to actively initate the connection. But, to make sure those possiblities are out:
Right click on "My Computer" and go to "Properties". Click on the "Remote" tab and uncheck both boxes. That removes any possiblility of windows being part of the problem.
Now, without windows, that means there is other software running on your computer that allows him to monitor what you're doing and access files. This is the hard part. To see a list of running processes, press ctrl+alt+delete and click on the processes tab. You're going to need to google each one of those to find out what's what. Right click on any of them and select "End Process TREE" (a better way to kill a process).
And the alternative way, the easy way, of doing this is to stop all programs from running at boot-up, To do that click on START %26gt; RUN. Type in: msconfig
From there, click on the last tab (startup) and un-check everything. That SHOULD disable any sort of trojan or VNC client running on your computer, however it's not fool proof.
My best suggestion would be for you to format your computer, and change your passwords and "secret questions" from another computer (NOT A PUBLIC COMPUTER!!! -- ie library or at school).
To directly answer your question, if he's "logged on" your computer you can view all network connections by going to START %26gt; Run %26gt; cmd and type in "netstat -a". It'll be a really long list, but if it's there it will show up.
Good luck.
Reply:Gads, 2of 5 didn't even read the question! You have a Macintosh, %26amp; never need to reload! 2 others think the police or FBI, costing about $1k to $10k per, even can help! No crime? What a creep ur Ex-bf is! Change all passwords, hints! Get a firewall, block his IP. Report to his ISP. Report It
Reply:If you are in the USA, I believe this is a federal crime; you might remind him of that as well. I suppose the FBI would even help.
Reply:change all of your passwords. Get offline for a little while then he can't get onto your computer. What a jerk.
Reply:Do you have ZoneAlarm? Download it free from www.downloads.com search zonealarm and read the reviews on it. This stops anyone from accessing your computer unless you allow it. Also it will give an IP address that you can search on yahoo/google.
Reply:i'd say call police
