I have an opportunity that will arise if I can quickly learn Unix. I need to learn it in about two weeks. Knowing that I have a job that would allow me to study about six hours on the clock and I can study for the rest of the night when I get home, do you think it is possible to learn Unix in two weeks?
If so, where should I start?
This would be an excellent opportunity so if you have any advice or resources that you would like to pass on, I would be eternally grateful.
Unfortunately, I do not have time to sign up for an official class.
Thanks to all!
Learning Unix?
If you're going to learn Unix for a job, I recommend investing a small bit of money into it versus using the web as the sole learning tool.
First of all, I would glance over this page - http://linuxcommand.org/learning_the_she...
Then, I would consider buying one of these two books - here's a great example - "Learn Unix in 24 Hours" http://www.askdavetaylor.com/teach_yours... Another wonderful introductory book is "Learning the Unix Operating System", found at http://www.amazon.com/Learning-UNIX-Oper... . I actually recommend the second book more. If you must have it rush delivered, so be it.
You can study a few hours a day and be good. I also recommend installing Cygwin on your computer (If you're runnign Windows) to pratice the Unix/Linux shell/scripting. It's basically command line Linux in Windows. Here's the link - http://www.cygwin.com/
Finally, here's a bash command reference which you can use in Cygwin - http://www.ss64.com/bash/
Good luck on your Unix quest.
Reply:I reccomend O'Riely books on unix. I am not sure if you want to learn administration or scripting. But given the time you mentioned and commitment you have, 3 weeks is good enough to get through.
UNIX is dreaded by many but its due to its text based editors and tricky vi editor. Believe me, once you are comfortable with UNIX you will hate windows.
Way to go, good luck.
Reply:Forgetaboutit kiddo, there's now way in this world you will learn unix in 2 weeks.....LOL, maybe windows but not unix.
Reply:yes, its possible if that job you are looking for require basic unix knowledge. You can learn basic unix commands ,their practical use and little bit C programming in unix if it required.
